Takashi Kitsune/GuAIZ R vs. Radon Antila/Windam

Radon Antila stepped out of his side of the circular arena. He had answered the challenge of Takashi Kitsune and, after much deliberation, found himself at the edge of a woodland arena riding a pack-less Windam. He couldn't see the opposite side of the arena clearly from here, given the woodland, but he could, indeed, spot the opposing GuAIZ R also stepping out.

He took a deep breath before gently pressing the button of his communications system, thinking how odd it was that, after retiring from the military at the end of the Second War, he would still find himself riding a mobile suit, albeit in a moderated engagement being watched all around the arena.

"Radon Antila, Windam, reporting all systems go and ready to engage."

At that, the crowd began to cheer, and he immediately throttled up to jogging speed. He put up his shield and pointed his beam rifle towards his opponent, as he strafed around the arena and moved through the trees.

Kitsune barely took time to look around as he entered into the arena.  Though he had come here to fight the crowds were an annoyance to him, he had come here soley for the combat experience he could gain.

Quickly he checked the readout inside his cockpit and seeing that everything was all green he opened his comm channel.

"This is Kitsune, systems green and I'm ready to go."  As he spoke Takashi watched while the enemy Windam began to strafe his position.  Not wanting to give his opponent any superior position Takashi sent his GuAIZ R into a strafe essentially creating a circle which would be completed as the suits circled each other.  Raising his sheild up into a defensive position Kitsune waited.

[OOC: Winders approved of it on Chat, where OPA also agreed to be the referee.]

And so it began.

Radon saw that his opponent had mirrored his movement; it was a good response to his own actions, but that gave Radon the chance to take the momentum in this battle. As the machines got to the right 90-degree of the circle that was the arena, Radon immediately turned into the woodland, jogging through the inner trees as he tried to get to the center.

All throughout, he kept his shield up and his rifle pointed. Although still unsure of what he was doing in a war machine again, he took a shot at his opponent through the trees.

Bringing his shield to bear Kitsune took the hit on his shield and as he did Takashi stored his beam rifle on his GuAIZ R's back.  Slowing down Takashi gritted his teeth together while the MS slid to a stop riping up the earth beneath its feet.  At the same time Takashi activated his rail cannons and brought them to bear and took aim at the Windam making the whole process one fluid motion.  Glancing at his targeting computer Kitsune watched it confirm a lock-on and he fired.

In taking such a quick shot Kitsune knew there was little hope that he would actually hit the Windam, but at the very least a fire might break out which would provide some actual cover in this arena.

Radon's continued jogging through the trees, coupled with his opponent's abrupt stop, allowed him to stay one step ahead of his opponent's reactive shots. One shot came up left and short, blasting the earth and coating his machine with a little dirt, a few rotting leaves and several branches, the latter two of which began to fall off with every step he continued to take. The other scored a direct hit on a tree he had just passed by, toppling it down behind Radon's path of motion. The attack did manage to start a small fire, centered on the downed trunk, sending burning leaves down to the ground like a slow shower of stars. The small fire slowly made it's way to other, nearby trees.

He Who Flew The First1 did not have time to turn and watch the spectacle, however. His focus was on gaining the advantage to be had at the center of the arena, and he was getting close to his immediate objective. On the other hand, there was his opponent, standing still with only the arena wall behind. Since Radon had not changed his speed, he now had a simpler firing solution - and he was not one to pass up an opportunity such as this. Noticing how the GuAIZ R's rail cannons - still outstretched - interfered with the unit's ability to shield itself, The Father of All Mobile Weapon Pilots1 found his ideal shot.

Radon Antila aimed his beam rifle at his opponent's right-hip-mounted Pollux IX rail cannon, and squeezed the trigger.

Footnote:

1Radon Antila's backstory is that he is the first person to ever fly a mobile weapon, the Moebius MA.

Takashi cursed as he saw that he'd left himself open, in an attempt to correct his mistake the GuAIZ R drew its rail cannons back in but it was too little too late.  The beam from the Windam struck the right rail cannon and Takashi quickly punched down on a release button as he fired his thrusters and sent himself shooting backwards towards the edge of the arena.  In front of him the rail cannon exploded and temporarily blinded him with its light, but that quickly faded and he confirmed the Windam's location.

"Baka," he thought to himself "don't rush things, be professional.  You can't throw your weapons around like they're toys, not now and not ever."  Drawing the GuAIZ R's beam rifle Kitsune leveled it at the Windam and watched his targeting computer go red.  He fired two shots at the machine's torso as he kicked on his thrusters which sent him jetting towards the Windam's right side.  "With any luck," Takashi thought to himself "maybe I'll get another shot."

Radon used the explosion to make further progress into the center of the arena, as he waited to recover his line of sight. As soon as he got to his desired location, he slowed down to a walk and began to move around the center in a circular, clock-wise direction, spotting Takashi drawing out his beam rifle from where it had been stored it just moments earlier.

Knowing where the shots would come from, but not where they would go, Radon defaulted to defending himself from the oncoming attack. It paid off when the enemy began to boost-dash toward his right side while sending two beam shots with regards. The first shot, made just before at the point of thrust, hit squarely on his shield. The second, made on the move, barely missed the edge of the anti-beam coated plate of protection. The test pilot-turned-gladiator knew that his opponent would still be at a distance for at least the next half-minute, but he also knew that both machine's changes in velocity meant that he had no clean shot at the GuAIZ R.

Taking his target's heading and thrust into account, he aimed for the base of a tree that would be in the other pilot's path, shooting it with a beam. Radon Antila hoped it would tumble and block his enemy's forward movement enough to give him more time to secure his position.

Ignoring his failed shots Takashi changed his direction at the same time he noticed the Windam fire a shot out in front of him.  Planting the GuAIZ R's feet on the ground he hit the thrusters again as he drew out the beam saber from his shield.  This time Takashi moved in with his shield in front of his MS to give himself the best cover possible.  With the beam saber on Takashi launched the GuAIZ R towards the Windam.

As he neared the machine Takashi stopped the GuAIZ R again and slashed from right to left with his beam saber.

[OOC: Winders says to just keep posting. OPA, if you're reading this, ask winders for more information.]

Radon was glad to see that the attack on the tree was effective, though not exactly the way he envisioned it. Having the GuAIZ R stop just a moment gave him enough time to settle himself into the center, though now it seemed as though his opponent had caught on and decided to cut Radon's advantage short. He watched as his opponent jumped over the fallen tree trunk, maintaining the dashing motion, and turning on the beam saber from the tip of the ZAFT machine's shield.

Given the way the shield was directly in front of the GuAIZ R, Radon knew that attempting a beam shot would be useless at this point. Takasahi seemed to be adamant about engaging him in melee, and so the veteran test pilot backed away slowly, shield still in front where it had always been. He replaced the rifle behind him and reached for his left beam saber with the right hand. Radon was satisfied to hear the sound of the saber's ignition.

The enemy unit stopped again, this time right in front of him, but Radon was ready. He held his saber at waist-height, and let Takashi's attack land smoothly across the Windam's shield. The momentum was enough to force him to pivot his feet slightly, but otherwise left him undamaged.

As soon as the saber's touch left his shield, Radon took the opening that appeared, shooting several bursts of his CIWS at his opponent's main camera, followed by a quick jerk with the thrusters to tackle the GuAIZ R with his shield.

Not one to make the same mistake again Takashi rolled his MS in a tight turn to the right using the GuAIZ R's thrusters to kick him through the spin.  At the same time he listened as bullets shot past the place he'd just been, quickly he thanked whatever powers just let him avoid that attack.  For a second Takashi paused to think; his opponent wasn't making any mistakes, that much was clear.  At the same time his opponent hadn't done much aside from move into the center of the ring and attack.  This whole thing was becoming pointless.

Using his thrusters again Takashi moved his MS back, taking a few leaps at a time until he felt that he was far enough away from the Windam.  From there he stored his beam saber and drew out his beam rifle,

"No more rushing things..." He told himself.  If this guy wanted him, he'd have to be the one to attack.

Radon had to respect his opponent's quick reactions to his counterattack; he had expected to at least tag the GuAIZ R in the eyes, but even that had been denied. As well, the sudden turn gave his opponent enough room to avoid being tackled with the shield; though Radon was disappointed that it hadn't worked, at least it meant that he hadn't damaged his shield yet. It also meant that his opponent was, in all likelihood, a Coordinator. Knowing that helped a little: Radon had killed his share of their kind, and knew how good even the least experienced ones they tended to be. The veteran was far from finished with his attack, however. He had achieved two of his objectives: to control the field, and to force his opponent to engage. It was now time to assure victory.

Keeping his eye on his target, he maneuvered his Windam towards the direction taken by his opponent, shield and saber still at their battle-ready positions. Matching the GuAIZ R's jumps, virtually leap for leap, Radon pursued his prey through the trees as he increased his speed back to a jogging pace in order to keep their distance close, and closing. Takashi was baiting him to come, but perhaps the Coordinator had not realized that Radon's actions up to now, was all done in order to get to this turning point.

His patience and forethought paid off: Takashi had finally stood his ground, and had chosen to ready his rifle. However, instead of mirrorring by stopping, Radon chose to make one last leaping charge off to the right side of the GuAIZ R, where his opponent's rifle was. With his shield still safely in front of him, Radon waited until his leap put him just past the end of the rifle's barrel, before bringing his eager saber blade down cleanly at the center of his opponent's long-range beam weapon.

Growling as his enemy pursued him Takashi quickly went through his list of options, but none of that mattered when the Windam didn't stop.  In near horror Kitsune watched the Windam pursue him so tactically that there was no point in shooting at the thing.  Finally he watched while the Windam's beam saber fell, then a crazy idea hit him.

Quickly he offset the GuAIZ R's weight and let the suit fall backwards until it crashed into the ground.  As he fell Takashi discarded his beam rifle and activated the remaining rail cannon.  Firing at point blank range he could only hope for the best but just in case the second his rail cannon's shot went off Takashi hit his thrusters which sent him shooting away from the enemy.

Now in motion Takashi corrected the position of his MS and drew out its beam saber, ready for whatever came next.

The referee stands on the sidelines, watching the battle take place.  The battle has become interesting; the whistle held loosely in his mouth by his lips lets out a slight sound each time he breathes.

He watches in amazement as Takashi makes a seemingly impossible dodge from CIWS fired by Radon; then again as Takashi makes yet another incredible dodge from Radons beam sabre attack.

The referee's hand lightly pats his pocket, full of yellow cards.

Radon was patently surprised to see the GuAIZ R seemingly slip and fall down, somehow managing to evade his saber attack completely. He didn't have more time to ask how that happened, however, as a bright light burst from up high and blinded both his screen and his eyes for a few seconds as his Windam landed. Deciding that it was better to be safe than sorry at the moment, Radon decreased his speed in order to carefully turn around and relocate his opponent with his still ready shield, only to see his target up on its feet again and on the move. The forgotten test pilot of Orb saw the ZAFT machine facing him with the remaining rail cannon retracting and the beam saber igniting, telling him all he needed to know about the miraculous escape. If it were not for the fact that he was Takashi's opponent, Radon would have been the first one to applaud such a bold maneuver; it was as bold as the ones he'd been forced to make in his heyday.

One thing caught Radon's eye immediately, as his Windam began to advance. As it was what he intended to do anyway, Radon had his mobile suit kick the idle GuAIZ R's beam rifle across the ground while punching it with some 12.5mm automatic fire, destroying it while it still remained in an unthreatening state. He hopped to the right to avoid the resulting reactor explosion, but kept his opponent in his sights. Radon Antila walked slowly towards Takashi Kitsune with his beam saber now braced on his shield and pointing forward menacingly.

To onlookers, The Father of All Mobile Weapon Pilots' Windam looked like a Cosmic-Era version of an ancient Roman legionnaire.

Swearing to himself Takashi looked at the Windam in frustration, it still stood and somehow he had completely missed the thing at point blank range.  Still, being in the fight was nothing to complain about, even if the loser had shot his beam rifle.  Drawing out his rail cannon Takashi locked on to the Windam's cockpit and fired one shot then aimed at the Windam's left shoulder in hope that the suit would dodge the shot.

For now it was all he could think to do with the pilot fighting with such reserve.

Radon could clearly see the rail cannon realigning itself for another shot. Every Soldier's Manual he'd come across had said that the best defense against a oncoming cannon shot was to get out of it's line of fire immediately, but Radon had long dismissed such standard tactics as being too optimistic, especially given his current speed, distance and combat stance. Besides, a legionnaire was stalwart, and did not budge.

Determined to show his opponent what boldness really meant, Radon thrusted full forward and met the shot head-on. His unit shook violently upon impact, but the shield held against its first non-beam attack of the engagement, taking the considerable damage and scorching that would have in all likelihood incapacited the Windam with a direct hit. Although he would normally disdain having to risk his precious defense in such a manner, the counteractive force of Takashi's shot cut his charging leap to exactly where he wanted to be: right in front of the exposed GuAIZ R.

Noting that the cannon had not retracted, Radon put his shield at the weapon's end, preventing its next shot from this position from hitting anything other than the metal barrier. As he did so, he let loose with point-blank CIWS fire at his target's main camera, and thrust his saber under the enemy's own shield - straight at the indefesible left arm of the ZAFT mobile suit.

I read this as being one cockpit shot, then taking aim at the left shoulder afterwards. Perhaps we should wait for OPA's ruling, then.

OOC - Actually I just reread what I wrote and I didn't fire two shots, so I'll respond in turn.

IC - Seeing that there was no where to go Takashi did the only thing he could, he fired his rail cannon again.  As the Windam's beam saber cut through his GuAIZ R's left arm Takashi also watched his main camera short out from the bullets which ripped apart his GuAIZ R's "face".

Even with the main camera and his suit's left arm gone Takashi fired a second shot from his rail cannon.  Maybe he couldn't win anymore, but he'd do his best to tear the other unit up if he could still fight.

Radon's hearing deafened as his opponent shot the rail cannon at point-blank, as he expected. His shield shattered and its equipped missles exploded, blasting him back and tearing his Windam's left arm off, as well as sending shrapnel into its frame. Though the cannon was damaged and scorched, he knew that his opponent would still attempt one last shot, regardless of how risky it was to do so.

Instinctively, Radon discarded his beam saber and wielded his beam rifle in mid-flight, twisting his machine around to line up his shot as the cannon fired once more. His forced backward motion made the shell miss, though barely, as the shell's path would have taken out his left arm had it still been attached. Radon's hearing returned just as the shell toppled several trees behind him, and as he levelled his rifle at his opponent, he saluted Takashi Kitsune for standing his ground.

The Windam crash-landed on the ground, sliding on its back until it stopped. He Who Flew The First aimed his rifle at the GuAIZ R's torso, and as burning trees fell in the distance, he fired three shots at his honorable opponent.

Even with his camera gone Takashi hit his thrusters and groaned as the GuAIZ R's wrecked frame shot to the right, the control systems were shot and short of being able to turn them on and off he'd always go right.  With his suit blind and out of control Takashi only knew a wall was in his way when his MS slammed into it.  Shaken by the blow he shook his head, this was no way to fight.  Opening the public comm channel he sent out a message,

"This is Takashi Kitsune, my main camera is offline and my thrusters are smoldering pieces of junk.  I'm resigning from this match, congratulations."  Pulling off his helmet Takashi looked at the Orb insignia on it and smiled, today had been a good day and he was sure the experience would help him in the future.

Radon watched as his three shots were evaded by the GuAIZ R thrusting to the right. He began to regain his Windam's footing, keeping his rifle at his opponent's direction as he thought the match would go on. When he saw the ZAFT machine slamming itself into the arena wall, only then did he realize the severity of his opponent's damage.

He raised himself up to a kneeling position, as his unit produced several sparks from exposed circuitry in the frame. He took careful aim at the immobile suit, ready to press the trigger, when he heard the transmission. He waited until he heard the arena's buzzer sounding, marking the end of the battle. The sprinklers of the arena turned on and showered the burning woodland to dissipate the brushfire.

Radon moved his finger away from the trigger, and holstered his rifle. He walked his straining machine over to his defeated opponent, opened his hatch as he said, "Good match, Takashi. I look forward to our next battle. For now, come on in and let's get back to the lounge. Soda's on me."

With that, Radon Antila lowered himself out of the Windam, and waited under the rain for the emergency response crew that would take both him and his opponent out of the embered battlefield.
