During his early years, he had spent most of his time at a catholic orphanage, often rebelling against his religious caretakers until he grew tired of the place and tried to make a life for himself. He was too young for anybody to legally hire him, so he soon found out that his choice might have been the wrong one to make. That was, until he joined up with the mercenary faction Serpent Tail. At first, it had only been as an errand boy; go here, give this to somebody, and come back with something else. The job paid well enough and Kai was glad that he was able to afford things on his own now; so he stuck with it. As he reached his early teens, he began to get more and more involved with Serpent Tail's activities, having grown strong enough and smart enough to help with the maintenance of many of the mercenary group's mobile suits. This job paid even better than when he had been an errand boy, and it allowed him to get closer to the new mainstay weapon of the world. Kai proved to be a competent mobile suit pilot once he was given the chance to get behind the controls of one, and it soon followed that Kai became a full fledged mercenary for the group that had helped give his life direction. All this turned upside down when the Soldiers of Fire emerged, taking away many jobs from Serpent Tail and stealing away members as well. The once famed mercenary group lost much of its former power, and it soon fell to the wayside after one bloody confrontation near PLANT territory. The battle would have been a decisive one for the Soldiers of Fire had it not been for the intervention of a ZAFT patrol squadron, causing the two mercenary groups to break off and retreat; leaving many of their fallen comrades behind. One such casualty was Kai Hiwatari, whom miraculously survived the battle, though had sustained severe head trauma from the ordeal he had been put through. He was taken to a hospital at the nearby military PLANT Armory One, where the full extent of his injuries was assessed. Asides from a great deal of blood loss, a cracked skull and a few broken ribs, he seemed to be in fine health physically, though his once blue eyes had been stained red by the event; a side effect from all the blood that had rushed to his head. On the psychological side of things, it seemed that Kai had suffered from amnesia, forgetting much of his past life with Serpent Tail. Whether this amnesiac condition was brought on from the injuries he had sustained, or because he wanted to get away from the occupation that had nearly killed him was unknown. During his stay at the hospital, Kai was often visited by a girl by the name of Inoue Yuriko, an aspiring medical student who would often visit the hospital to cheer up patients by bringing in flowers and seeing what she could learn on the medical side of things. Yuriko lived close to the hospital due to the fact that her older brother/ legal guardian were enlisted in the military there. Yuriko had taken pity on Kai, and opened up her home to him, feeling that it was the least she could do for the poor homeless soul. Despite their age difference, it was soon evident that the pair was becoming a close couple; a strange occurrence as neither one had ever seemed all that outgoing. The pair continued to have a strong relationship, despite the qualms that Yuriko's brother had about Kai, and they had seemed destined to stay together; at least until Yuriko had enlisted herself in the military in the medical division. Kai was afraid that Yuriko would get herself hurt or worse, and was faced with a choice: either let go the girl he loved, or to follow behind her in the shadows, constantly ensuring her safety no matter where she went. Valiant 96
I don't recall a battle between the Soldiers and Serpent Tail.
Kaizer 0
Perhaps the SoF members he thought had been hired to oppose the Serpent Tail members during that particular mission. Just because Serpent Tail and the Soldiers of Fire were mostly neutral towards each other, that doesn't mean that some of their members might end up getting into a brawl or two depending on the missions they're sent on. winders 0
I think a small skirmish between SoF and ST is fine, as long as it wasn't dragged out to become full conflict. People always have problems and that'll always turn into a brawl as Nick said.

This looks like it's a confrontation between both organisations to me.
