The Sword Astray is an effort to construct an effective close ranged mobile suit that can last longer than other astrays due to less power constraints. Rather than using a bare sword, simlarly to what Junk Guild's Lowe Guele did to his Astray Red Frame. This mobile suit was designed shortly after the production of the Murasame but the project was slowed down due to the war. It also has a few features that most other Mobile suits do not have, such as a longer operating time due to an upgraded energy battery and the battery in the Aile Striker that it is permanently equipped with, as the binders and shrike packs used by the M1 Astray proved to be inefficient to carry the added weight of the Sword Astray.

It features an upgraded energy battery, with a longer operating time and a variable output, which can be changed according to the pilot. The Aile Striker pack still retains its battery, increasing the Sword Astray's operating time. It also has handplugs for Earth Alliance, ZAFT and Orb, just in case the need arises for it to use dropped ranged weapons.

This mobile suit is to also to utilize the Astray's flexible design to a speciality, rather than just adding on additional backpacks. So far, it has proved to be a cost effective mobile suit, but it is still slightly expensive for a mass production mobile suit. Due Orb's other successful mobile suits, this design was eventually scrapped. Only 1 prototype was made, and it is said to be in the Izumo-Class battleship, Akira.

It notably has the capabilites of the first three surviving original Astrays, the red, blue and gold Frames.

It has been recently been upgraded with extra veriniers to increase mobility.  The Sword Astray's main armament is a "Schwert Gewehr" anti-ship sword which differ from the Sword Strike Gundam's version in that they double as laser guns.

I made this for an RP long ago. It was made to be a low-cost prototype built from modified spare parts, mostly. And if you guessed right, among all the other MS in that RP, this was the cheapest and so-called "weakest" of them all. Comments and stuff?

Well, keep in mind it doesn't use all the beam weapons at once. He just uses one according to the situation. Its supposed to be an adaptable MS without having to change packs during battle or whatever.

Stilettos? Salvaged from the countless remains of Windams that fell? Not too hard if you count how many got shot down, really.

The salvage idea is a good one, but remember that eventually they would run out of salvaged knives, and using a publicly registered EA armament might get them into trouble legally (the arms manufacturer would have a copyright license on the right to produce the stilleto, so Orb would have to make a knock-off of their own to avoid it).

Can you explain what the Echelon VII coating does exactly?  Its pretty ambiguous at the moment.  As well, having hand plugs that can fit all 3 faction's weapons would be difficult to make, as each faction would try and make their weapons difficult for their enemies to use.  As well, I would like to know how an Aile pack can change into Hi-Mat wings (would remind me of SRW's Wild Wurger and Wild Falken... Boost on! Twin Bird Strike! x3)

And just how does a variable output battery affect a suit with no support systems really?  I remember back when I Admin'ed Lost Hope (a gundam RP that Rob, Keri, and a bunch of us made on a whim; we were affiliated with SEED RPG until Advent Destiny came into the works), that I had a Saviour Gundam with a similar system, only that it was a seperate system within the saviour that was able to alter the battery output so that I could either increase the duration and effect of PS armor by sacrificing thruster power, or decrease PS support to a minimal level to increase speed in MA mode.  So can your battery do something similar?

Well considering my character was in Serpant Tail later on, it wasn't much of an issue for the EA weapons. The black market is such a good excuse. <_<

SRW ftw. XD. I want Zengar's sword. >_>

And yeah, the handplugs thing was constantly updated. And if I remembered right, ironically, it was more expensive to develop that than to salvage stiletto knives. The variable output was basically for the aile striker pack itself, and to regulate the power flow from the thrusters on the pack to the suit itself. Power allocation stuff, since my suit doesn't have PS armor. I forgot to add this, but due to the handplug's nature, its able to emit raw energy like the Red Frame.

The armor? Its just some experimental alloy with ablative gel layers among them. Allows some protection against energy weapons, I guess. This was 2 years ago, mind you. Rofl. I only changed it a year+ ago. Haven't looked at it since.

"Ware wa Zenger, Zenger Zonvolt! Aku wo tatsu tsurugi nari!"

You want a colossal blade, eh? .  I had one of those once, though I never got a chance to use it at SEED RPG.  If we had kept going with the site, I would have worked towards getting a Sword Calamity Type 0

Technical and Historical Notes

With the increase in conflict around the globe and the space around it; the neutral countries of Earth began to take their safety more seriously. The Kingdom of Scandinavia was one of these states that decided to take their military efforts to the next level after the appearance of mobile suits. The RG-11 is the Kingdom's first effort at a combat orientated mobile suit; its predessors (RG-01 onwards to RG-10) were suits developed for testing new features. The result was a light, powerful yet manueverable mobile suit exclusively used for Scandinavian Royal Guards that preferred piloting over infantry.  It is also easily modifiable, and is thus used to further test new features and armaments, such as those found on the RG-11Z Berah Zero Custom.

This variant of the RG-11 was designed to help develop a pilots levels of spatial awareness, and use them to their fullest.  As such, it was given a panoramic cockpit to allow its pilot to view battles from an almost perfect 360 degree area of sight.  The space needed to accomodate such a cockpit and its more complex operating systems required designers to remove the RG-11's standard emergency evacuation feature.  The reasoning behind such a risky decision was that any pilot capable of mastering this machine wouldn't need to worry about ejecting from his suit.  In the end, the suit was given a radar absorbing material (RAM) coating to help extend the lifetime of its pilot.

While many of the RG-11's standard armament was retained, the RG-11Z loses its forearm mounted grenade launchers in exchange for a pair of new weapons.  Replacing the grenade launchers are a pair of forearm mounted CCMX1 chakram casters.  Chakram casters are large, disc shaped weapons that are launched at an opponent while remaining attached to the suit by a wire.  The discs themselves are equipped with beam emitters, allowing them to cause greater damage if they come into contact with an opposing unit.  These weapons are a derivation of the Earth Alliance's gunbarrel technology, meaning only skilled pilots can use them without tearing the wires from their own weapon.

When the RG-11Z was first conceived, Former Earth Alliance Lieutenant Commander Sanger Zonvolt was chosen to test it, and accepted the suit on the condition that an additional weapon be added to its armaments.  The "Colossal Blade" is a large anti-armor katana, whose size and weight made it difficult for the standard RG-11 frame to wield properly.  The RG-11Z was given a larger frame and more powerful hydraulics systems to allow it to use the ungainly weapon with ease.  These improvements come at a price however, as the RG-11Z is less energy efficient then the standard RG-11.

I'm still wondering how the aile pack would change into a Hi-Mat mode, but aside from that, it doesn't look like all that impossible a mobile suit (though you would have to be sure to mention the armor and power regulator in the technical notes section if you ever decide to update).  If it came down to it, I don't think I'd want a Zankantou/Colossal Blade (depending on whether you want to call it by the translation or not); I'd rather have Valsione R or a Wild Falken L. "It doesn't matter if its a gun or not, I always go melee!", Arado is so full of win

As for that Sword Calamity I mentioned, well I did some digging through my old notes (takes a while to sort through a lot of them, as I never bothered to name many of them ), and guess who's half-finished specs I found?

Unit #: RG-X133

Codename: Sword Calamity Gundam Type O

Unit type: Prototype close combat mobile suit

Manufacturer: Kingdom of Scandinavia (Northern Aerials)

Operators: Kingdom of Scandinavia, Sanger Zonvolt

First Deployment: Unknown

Height: head height 18.26 meters

Weight: max gross weight 84.23 metric tons

Construction: unknown material

Accomodations: standard single seater in torso

Powerplant: Ultracompact energy battery, output unknown

Equipment and Design features: Trans Phase Shift Armor (TPS); modified short range sensors;

hardpoints to attach optional armaments

Fixed Armaments:

2x P30M vulcan cannons, fire-linked, mounted in head

2x CCMX1 chakram casters, forearm mounted, can be fired out on a line

1x "Scylla" 580mm hyper-impulse cannon, chest mounted

Optional Fixed Armaments:

2x HEOBW5 beam swords, shoulder mounted, hand carried in use

2x "Schwert Gewehr" 15.78 meter anti-ship sword, back mounted, hand carried in use

-or-

1x CCM17 tower shield, left shoulder mounted, stores 1x micro-energy battery

1x HEOBW1-EX "Zankontou" rocket propelled 17.5 meter anti-ship sword, back mounted, hand carried in use

I think I was sorely tempted to add Rocket fists to this thing when I started the whole Sanger charrie, But settled on using chakrams to preserve realism.  I can't remember what the extra battery in the shield was supposed to be for

I think it might have been for extended operating time, and to keep the two sides of the suit balanced in terms of weight; like I said, I never got to developing the idea as we moved to AD shortly after I started thinking about it

Since this is for fun, I might as well join.

I worked on this design back at SEED RPG when Valiant inquired about Nation leader positions.  (I was slated to get the Republic of East Asia)

Anyways...

Accommodation: pilot only, in standard cockpit in torso

Dimensions: head height 18.67 meters

Weight: max gross weight 70.7 metric tons

Construction: unknown

Powerplant: ultracompact energy battery, power output rating unknown

Equipment and design features: sensors, range unknown

Optional hand armaments: M9500S beam 'fletchette' rifle, power rating unknown

Historical Notes

The GAT-04+AQM/E-A4E1 Jet Windam uses a Jet Striker pack similar to the AQM/E-X01 Aile Striker pack used by the legendary GAT-X105 Strike Gundam. Aside from allowing for atmospheric flight, the Jet Striker pack features numerous launchers for rockets, air-to-surface and air-to-air missiles.

Due to the relatively subservient status of the Republic of East Asia (REA) in the Earth Alliance, they were the last of the top three nation states to obtain the specifications for the Dagger and Windam line of mobile suits.  While the Dagger line of mobile suits was thoroughly introduced into the REA military, the Windams had a relatively limited distribution.  As such, Windams were only given to certain commanders and exceptional pilots.

One such Windam was given to the Commander of the elite Red Dragon Guard.  Because the REA went all-out to close the technological gap between them and their Earth Alliance compatriots (Atlantic Federation and Eurasian Federation) new, exclusive weaponry has been incorporated into several Windams in order to increase their lethal capabilities.  This Windam not only contained some new weapons, it also has been modified for improved speed and maneuverability; it is approximately 10% more mobile than standard Windams.

Techincal Notes

Shield with 'Dragon Tail' heat rod

Instead of focusing on typical energy weaponry such as beam sabers, some REA developers focused on diverse, solid weapon systems.  One such result was the Dragon Tail heat rod.  It is essentially a long, metallic chain of pointed blades that can be swung or lashed out at enemies for great damage potential.  If used right, it can also latch onto and grapple enemy suits.  The full length of the rod is measured out around 35 meters.  It can be retracted into the specially shaped shield until about 10.5 meters is left out.

Another feature is the fact that the rod can be heated to increase its lethality.  A good swipe could slice through a standard line mobile suit like a hot knife through butter.  But there are several problems that have yet to be solved.  It can only be heated for very short durations (3 sec charge time, average 5 second duration) before overheating.  It also drains more power than both standard beam sabers combined when activated.  Also, the length and weight of the rod makes it a very unwieldly weapon to use.

M9600S beam 'fletchette' rifle

The standard Windam beam rifle was replaced with a new rifle utilizing special beam refraction technology.  This rifle essentially fires a 'scattershot or 'shotgun' beam blast.  Power consumption is approximately the same as with standard beam rifles.  It is very effective at short range, in which it can literally shred/puncture armor off suits.  That said, because the refraction effect essentially creates a blast of smaller beams, this weapon is ineffective at medium to long ranges, since the beams dissipate quickly in both atmosphere and in space.

(And yes, the 'Dragon Tail' heat rod is based on Epyon's. )

Hmm, is the Jet Striker still an optional pack for the Red Dragon, or is it built into this model?  Seeing as you said this Windam was more mobile then other Windams, I'm wondering if its the base Windam's maneuverability that we are talking about, or the Jet Windam's maneuverability (Jet Windam >> Base Windam ).  If its built in, then you technically wouldn't be able to call it a multi-mode mobile suit any more (nit-picking, yes, but there's little else for me to do when there's not much wrong with it).

The heat rod has nothing wrong with it, as it has its own defects, which have been duly noted, and the flechette is the same, as its basically as you said a 'beam shotgun'.  The weapon itself would most likely be more expensive to produce then a beam rifle, so I wouldn't see it getting much widespread use, but specialists with custom suits such as the Red Dragon Windam might see it as a powerful weapon (fast unit with a close range inventory, I foresee many mobile suits heading to the junk yard cause of him )

@Kaizer: Heh, that was the idea.  And yes, I mean the overall speed and maneuverability of the Jet Windam overall.  (I didn't edit the 'Unit Type' too well, did I? )

Who knows, maybe some time in the future, I may bring this design or some variant of it into the main RP.
