Personal History:

Locked somewhere in Ray Katsuki’s mind are the memories of Baynard Zoldark, but that person is all but dead.

“Ray Katsuki” is the son of Bian Zoldark, the hero-turned-defector of ZAFT during the Bloody Valentine Wars. As a young child, well before the wars, Baynard, as he was called then, looked up to his father and always aspired to be like him: strong, smart, and with an unshakable sense of duty. In order to follow in his father’s footsteps, Baynard enlisted in ZAFT the moment he graduated secondary school, barely 15, and was proud to fight by his father’s side during the First Bloody Valentine War. His father was an excellent field officer, leading his squadron to victory or survival engagement after engagement with Bian’s superior tactics. This distinction earned Bian and his son numerous medals, and Baynard’s father was hailed as a war hero.

During the short-lived peace, Baynard was promoted, and given his own squadron. While he busied himself with work, he still made sure to help raise his sister Lune with the same tender loving care both his parents had given him. All the while, he also made use of his spare time studying tactics under his father’s tutelage, in order to become as effective a leader as Bian was. His trial by fire came when the Second Bloody Valentine War occurred. Baynard’s squadron participated in several skirmishes before being assigned their first true mission. The mission was to scout out a suspected enemy outpost, but instead of a small force, they came upon a well-defended space station that the Earth Alliance could use to deploy forces well within ZAFT space. Baynard decided to lead his men on an aggressive raid of the station, damaging the base just enough so that the EA was forced to abandon it. This success earned Baynard and his squadron the Order of the Nebula, a medal given out only to the most courageous and most skilled pilots of ZAFT, a medal that not even his father had earned in Bian’s entire career.

Baynard continued to serve as a loyal commander of ZAFT for the rest of the war, but was shocked when he was told that his father had taken her sister and was planning to defect to the Atlantic Federation in the midst of the instigation of the Destiny Plan. He could not understand why his father would do something he thought to be treasonous, and in the hopes of being able to reason with his father, he requested that he and his squadron be sent off to intercept Bian. They never met, however, as they were ambushed along the way, with Baynard’s unit itself being destroyed in the middle of space. Baynard somehow managed to survive the conflagration, and was captured by the Earth Alliance, but the cost had been his memory. He could remember that he was a ZAFT Commander, along with the skills he had learned at the Academy, but everything else was hazy – he had even forgotten his own name.

He remained a prisoner on the ship’s medical bay for a week, until he finally made the decision to escape. Along with his memories, his remorse had evidently also been lost, as he callously killed anyone who stood in the way of his escape. After days of playing hide-and-seek with the Earth Alliance, Baynard managed to return to the PLANTs. There, he was finally returned to the nearest ZAFT outpost, where his body was nursed back to health, though most of his memory still did not return. His superiors thought it best for him to retire from the military, but he was able to convince them that he had not lost his command experience. However, they knew that the Zoldark was no longer as revered as it used to be, and so Ray Katsuki was born.

Ray survived for the remainder of the war, and though he was just as successful in his missions as he was prior to losing his memory, his methods had changed. Whereas before, his tactics revolved around being able to keep his squadron alive, Ray did not think twice about sending his men as sacrificial lambs in order to complete the mission. It earned him the title of the Lunar Wolf, for his propensity to use his ‘pack’ as he saw fit, with the mindset that it was up to him to do everything alone – the mindset he picked up from his time in captivity. He soon gained the reputation of being the most effective but least loved Commander in ZAFT, as proved when he again earned the Order of the Nebula before the war was over, albeit with the loss of his entire squadron. Still, he is the only person in the history of ZAFT to ever earn two.

A decade of peace has allowed Ray Katsuki to pursue less combative hobbies, such as playing the violin and listening to orchestra and recitals. His doctors say it might be his previously caring personality beginning to reemerge, but Ray is unsure of what to make of it. The only thing he could be sure of is that he remembers a very young girl’s face - his sister, they say - whenever he plays a particular children’s song on his violin. Recalling her face is the only time Ray ever feels loved, and he wonders if she would someday be the key to remembering who he was, should she still be alive
